Wish Ya Later

Last Wishes (by AtDisneyAgain)Last week, as I’m sure most of you know, Wishes was retired. When I heard the news, I was sad. But then I thought about it. And, sure, I remember the first time I saw Wishes …

Actually … no, I don’t. Because my first “Wishes memory” is from 2001, so I am actually “remembering” Fantasy in The Sky. Cool. Even if I’m not really sure when I saw Wishes for the first time, I am sure it dazzled me and probably made me tear up.

But over the past several years, I remember watching it from the Rose Garden and watching it from the center of the Hub and watching it from way down Main Street near the The Chapeau.

I’ve seen it from Narcoossee’s. I’ve seen it from Fort Wilderness. I’ve seen it from aboard the TTA and from aboard Big Thunder Mountain (a great show, if I do say so!). I saw the show countless times from the Top of the World Lounge in Bay Lake Tower, and over time, the show impressed me less and less. Seen Wishes once, seen it a million times, right?

After awhile, Wishes sort of faded into the background. It dropped off my “Must Do” List, as Stacey would say. In recent years, Dan and I saw Wishes multiple times from back in Frontierland or Adventureland, not bothering to rush to the front of the Park to see the full show.

So when we were in town last month, we made sure to set aside a couple of hours to spend camping out in the Hub for one of the final performances of the fireworks. And it actually wasn’t bad at all. The crowd was mostly calm and polite, and seated bodies filled the Hub. We all knew why we were there.

And when the show started, many of us stayed seated and enjoyed the performance from the ground. And it was great. It was Wishes. But I don’t think I’ll miss it much. In fact, the thing I am going to miss most about Wishes is actually how Dan sings the song. He makes his voice as annoying and high as possible and belts it out … it’s terrible and wonderful all at once.
