Kill Refurb Marry: MyMagic+

Kill Refurb Marry Blog HopYou are probably familiar with the popular parlor game, Kill Boff Marry, where given the choice between three people, you must decide which you’d murder, sleep with and spend the rest of your life with. Well, this is the WDW-themed version called Kill Refurb Marry. Even better: There’s a Blog Hop connected to the game, so everyone can play along! Check out links for all of the players on this month’s the Kill Refurb Marry homepage.

This month, we’re sounding off on MyMagic+ and all of its many facets.  I know lots of folks have had problems with the new services and functionality, but my experience with MyMagic+ has been mostly positive. And I’m looking forward to seeing what WDW has planned for the future … of course, that doesn’t mean I have no complaints …

Kill: PhotoPass Memory Maker

PhotoPassPhotoPass used to be pretty easy to use. You have your photo taken, and get it loaded onto a card. Later, you use the information on the card to download your photos. Forgot your card? No worries: It was possible to link up multiple cards to the same account very simply. Then came PhotoPass+, and there went simplicity.

In this new world order, everyone on the reservation can save photos to the PhotoPass account with their MagicBand. But only the person with the “entitlement” (the “owner” of the account, so to speak) can actually download them. You can also see and download photos of friends and family you’ve linked in My Disney Experience–even if they’re not in your travel party. And if you’re staying off property or traveling without MagicBands? Well … things just got even more confusing.

Something that was very simple has become entirely convoluted. No, thanks.

Refurb: FastPass+

Magic Bands (Disney Parks)Don’t misunderstand: I love FastPass+. I love being able to schedule my activities in advance. And, no, I don’t think it sucks the spontaneity out of my trips; I think it makes it possible to ensure that I get to do the things I really, really want to do. But here’s the thing: It’s too damn restrictive.

I can make three FastPasses per day. They all have to be in one Park. Want to Park Hop (an option that many guests pay a premium for)? Tough. Your Passes all have to be in the same Park. Once you’ve used all three, you can book Passes at another Park. But you have to be in that Park. At an in-Park kiosk. The app is useless at this point. Also: You can only make one Pass at a time. To make a fifth Pass, you have to return to an in-Park kiosk in the Park where you want to use the Pass, and you can only make it after you’ve already used the fourth. Ditto for the sixth. And so on.

I cannot make more than 3 Passes each day, until all of my other passes must have been used/expired. That means, if one of my FastPasses is for Illuminations viewing, I can forget about making a fourth Pass that day (because my third Pass doesn’t expire until Park closing).

This doesn’t even begin to cover so-called Tier 1 and Tier 2 Attractions and how they can totally ruin your day in Hollywood Studios and EPCOT. And it also doesn’t begin to explain how large Tour Groups are able to game the FastPass system to completely overwhelm it and create lines that are longer than the stand-by line!

The system needs work.

Marry: MagicBands

MagicBands (Mouse on the Mind)When Disney first introduced MagicBands, I was not psyched. I figured they’d be uncomfortable and annoying … and, really, they’ve been anything but. I love my MagicBands. They’re not uncomfortable, and they’re totally useful. MagicBands have made it possible for me to go into the Park without a bag. I love touch-to-pay. I love wearing my room key. I love how it’s created a new opportunity for us to inject our own unique style and character into Park-going. I love how having an extra band strapped on to a purse I accidentally left behind in a restaurant made it easy for Disney to track me down and return my bag. The only thing I don’t like? I want more color options. (And I don’t want to have to pay for them, damnit!) But otherwise? Love!
