Getting a haircut isn’t exactly what I’d consider fun or special, but getting a haircut at Disney World … maybe.
There’s a fully-functioning barbershop on Main Street in the Magic Kingdom with some great cast members. Known as the Harmony Barber Shop, it’s located between the Car Barn and the Emporium–it used to be located halfway down Main Street, but moved during the West Center Street expansion of the Emporium in 2001.
The Harmony Barber Shop is probably most well known for offering First Haircuts–this package includes saving some of the cut hair, a specially embroidered pair of “First Haircut” mouse ears, and a certificate. For older kids and adults, the shop offers a standard haircut, with the option of getting your hair colored and sprinkled with pixie dust. (Dan went with the glitter.) And every patron gets a mouse sticker!
The décor in here is fab. Outside, you will find the classic red and white barber pole, and the Dapper Dans frequently stop by to serenade patrons throughout the day. Inside, the walls are adorned with classic pictures of turn-of-the-century Americana and barber props.
But the glitter and decor aren’t the only entertainment on the menu here: Dan’s cosmetologist, Shawna, told him that Cosmetology Cast Members rotate through different roles throughout the Parks regularly–so your hair cuttist may have been doing hair for the on-camera talent at ESPN broadcasts on property or for the parades throughout the resort or even at the Bibbity Bobbity Boutique! So make sure you ask your stylist where s/he’s been–you may get an exciting story out of the day.
The old timey salon is open from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. every day, but the waits can be up to an hour! You can put your name in and then come back when it’s time for your cut. Or you can call ahead through the Disney Dining Line (407-WDW-DINE) to make an appointment. Friends recommend stopping by at the beginning of the day or around lunch if you want to get in as a walk-up.
An adult haircut is currently $19, and a child 12 and under is $15, but prices as subject to change. The First Haircut package is $18. Beard and mustache trims are $10, and colored hair gel with glitter is $5. Something important to note: Harmony Barber Shop accepts credit cards, but tips are strictly cash only, so make sure you have at least a couple of bucks on hand!
