I often think of Disney places and characters when I’m putting together my nail colors. It just makes me happy to look down at my fingers flying over the keyboard and know that my “boring, old” red, white and black manicure was inspired by a classic scene from Alice in Wonderland … even if no one else knows.
A few months ago, I mentioned my habit to Estelle from This Happy Place Blog, and an idea was born. Our mad scheme just needed a third … and who better to join us on a quest to share Disney-themed nail art than Nicole of Sparkly Ever After?!
Colors from the Parks: The Purple Faerie
(inspired by Cinderella Castle in Magic Kingdom)
Cinderella Castle is pretty much the most iconic image of Disney World, and I love her most at night when she’s lit up and in the pre-holiday days when she’s dripping with icicle lights. She’s also my most-replicated nail color since I discovered Julep’s Geo, a lavender holographic glitter polish, in November. Since the polish is so light and sparklicious, it looks best over a gray: originally, I was using Confetti’s Lonesome Dove (my go-to color) as a base, but recently, I received Essie’s Chinchilly. They call it a “sleek granite” gray, but it’s got cool, almost purple undertones, and it looks awesome paired with Geo.
My most useful nail tip is quick dry drops! I use Julep’s Ta Da! Quick Dry Polish Drops, but Essie and OPI also make drops. They work wonders–from wet and tacky to ready-for-anything in just five minutes flat!
Colors from the Resorts: VicFlorian
(inspired by the bedspread in the Grand Floridian Villas)
This bedspread … I would have taken it home with me in a heartbeat, and as soon as I got home from my recent trip to the Grand Floridian Villas, I set about trying to recreate the color palate with polishes already in my arsenal. I wasn’t able to get it exactly with what I already had at home, but these three Julep polishes (Noelle, a sandy-colored satin finish; Kai, a mottled baby blue; and Hannah, a sandy sage green) come pretty darn close!
The perfect look for this colorway? Polka dots, of course! To create the perfect dot, I cut off the pointy end of a toothpick and use it to create the dots while my base coat is still just a bit wet. Easy peasy!
Colors from the Films: Rawr! Best Buddies
(inspired by the 2001 Pixar film Monsters, Inc.)
This polish combination was my first experience with Disney nail colors! When I first saw Sally Hansen Hard as Nails Xtreme Wear in Green with Envy on the shelf in my drug store, I immediately thought of Mike Wazowski, and I knew I had to have it. Soon after, I paired it with Claire, a medium sky blue from Julep, and my first Disney polish mash up was born! I’ve tried purple polka dots (using Julep Charlotte) with these two in the past, but I haven’t been able to get the look right. Then, a bottle of Sally Hansen Fuzzy Coat came across my desk at work … and I couldn’t believe my luck! How fun and furry!
I am a messy manicurist. I used to “clean up” the edges with a bit of polish remover on a q-tip, but now I just paint my nails at night! The heat from the next morning’s shower loosens any polish left on my skin so it rubs right off!
